Eating in the Fifties

To us pasta dishes had not been invented at home the nearest we got was either macaroni cheese or tinned spaghetti in tomato sauce.
To us curry was only a surname.
A take away was a mathematical problem we were set at school,
Pizza was a leaning tower somewhere in Italy (we could not spell).                Bananas, oranges and dates only appeared at home at Christmas time.
All crisps were plain with separate salt packets and not crinkle cut.
Oil was only used for lubricating things and fat was only used for cooking.
Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and a strainer. It was never green and never ever in bags.
Cubed sugar was regarded as being posh and required a special sugar bowl and sugar tongs.
Our fish did not have fingers in those days or did our chickens have nuggets.
None of us had ever heard of any sort of yoghurt the only thing like it was junket made with rennet.
Healthy food was anything that was edible.
Cooking out of doors was called camping and no one had heard of a barbeque.
And seaweed was not a food, if anything it was to spread on the garden.
Kebab was not even a word never mind a food.
Sugar had a good press in those days and was regarded as pure white gold.
Prunes were normally eaten as a medicinal product usually with custard.
Muesli was available but then it was called cattle feed.                                          Pineapple only came in chunks or rings in a tin, we had only ever seen a picture of a real one in a book.                                                                                                             Water came out of a tap and if someone had even suggested bottling it, labelling it and selling it for more than the price of a bottle of petrol, they would have been a laughing stock.

Finally: The things that we never had on our tables at home were elbows, hats and mobile phones (whatever they are!).
