I have to thank Steve Timms for forwarding me this latest selection.

Another one of those Remember When Pages.

Many of the girls had to wear ugly gym slips.

We had to wear a cap or beret to school

It took over five minutes for the TV set to warm up

Nobody you knew owned a purebred dog

You'd reach into a muddy gutter to retrieve a penny

All male teachers wore ties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels

You got your windscreen cleaned, oil checked and petrol served, without asking, all for free, every time.

The school authorities threatened to keep children back a year if they failed to reach the accepted standard for the school year. . .And they did!

When a Ford Zephyr or Zodiac with its column gear chane and bench front seats was everyone's dream car

And people went steady

Spinning around and around and getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles?

Playing cricket with no adults to help the children with the rules of the game

Bottles came from the corner shop without safety caps and hermetic seals or sealed in plastic because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger

And with all the progress over the last few decades, don't you wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savour the slower pace of life and share it with the children of today?

When being sent to the headmasters office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited you when you got home

Basically, we were respectful and to a degree scared, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, violence etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we survived because we knew that their love was greater than the threat.

Summers were always filled with bike rides, cricket, Hula Hoops, skating and visits to the pool or the beach, eating lemonade powder or sucking liquorice sticks until your mouth went black

One of the best things you could own at the time was a Roy Rogers watch

Now didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, 'Yes, I remember that'?

Now how Many of These Do You Remember?

Coca Cola came in glass bottles not cans and only in individual sizes not litre bottles

Blackjacks, fruit salads, gob stoppers and bubble gums.

Home milk delivery in glass bottles with tinfoil tops

Record players, Hi-Fi systems, 45 RPM records and EP’s.

Even 78 RPM records

The postman always delivered twice a day

Do You Remember a Time When..

Decisions in the playground were always made by going 'Eeny-meeny-miney-moe'? or ‘Dip, Dip Dip, my little ship’

'A race issue' meant arguing about who ran the fastest and for which House

Catching tadpoles and tiddlers could happily occupy an entire day

It wasn't odd to have two or three or even more 'Best Friends'

The worst thing you could possibly catch from the opposite sex was 'chickenpox'

Having a weapon in School meant being caught with a pea shooter, water pistol, cap gun or a catapult.

War was a card game

Cigarette or chewing gum cards place in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle

Taking drugs meant you were given orange - flavoured chewable aspirin

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon

You would not miss the conker season, or marbles season for anything

If you can remember most or all of theseitems, then you have lived DURING A REALLY GOOD TIME!!!!!!! We were the lucky ones! I would not want to be a youngster today, it is all too complicated.

 Keep in touch

Yours

Peter
